Why do room temperature and smell matter so much?

Being too hot is not a background detail for everyone. For some autistic children and adults it fills the whole foreground, and sleep is usually the first thing to go.

Thermoregulation can work differently, and interoception may not raise the alarm until things are well past comfortable. Smell is the other half of it, because a cooking odour or a cleaning product lingering in a bedroom can make that room unusable long after anyone else has stopped noticing.
