Why do swinging and hiding away help?

Swinging feeds the vestibular system, the inner-ear sense that tracks movement and the position of the head. A child who spins, rocks or climbs the furniture is usually looking for exactly that.

The other half of this is retreat. When a day has been too loud, a small enclosed dark space cuts the incoming information down to almost nothing. That is a far better outcome than a meltdown in a lounge room full of people.
