How does deep pressure input help with regulation?
Firm, even pressure across the body — a heavy quilt, a snug sock, a hard push against something that pushes back — is called deep pressure proprioceptive input. Proprioception is the sense that tells the brain where the limbs are without looking.
Occupational therapists use it because many autistic people report it makes the body easier to locate and less noisy. It is often written into a sensory diet: planned input at set points in the day, rather than something reached for only after distress has already arrived.
This collection covers weighted quilts, compression sheets and sensory body socks, compression gloves, weighted lap bears, ankle and leg weights, resistance hand exercisers and a therapy swing. Classroom aides tend to choose a lap bear, since it stays put during a lesson. Weight is usually matched to body weight, and we are glad to talk that through first.
