Washing and Hygiene
What makes washing and bathing so difficult?
Getting into the shower, staying in it, and getting out again can each be a separate hurdle. Water temperature, spray pressure and the smell of soap all register more strongly for some autistic people.
Interoception, the sense that reports on what is happening inside the body, is often less reliable in autistic children and adults. If you cannot easily tell that you are too hot, too cold or unwashed, a routine has to carry the job that instinct usually does.
You will find temperature-sensing shower heads that change colour with the water, bidet seat covers, an automatic toothpaste dispenser, silicone rubbing towels and long-handled bath brushes. Motion-sensor bins and a countertop dishwasher sit here too, for households where touching a lid or a tap is the sticking point. Several items were chosen for teenagers moving towards washing without a parent in the room.
Every Australian address gets free tracked delivery, whatever the size of the order, and GST is already counted in the price. Our seven-day change-of-mind window does not stretch to opened personal hygiene items, and the bigger appliances here are excluded on freight grounds, so the refund policy is worth a read first. Anything faulty we take back and pay for.
