What makes getting shoes on so slow?

Tying a lace asks for several things at once: two hands doing different jobs, a sequence held in mind, and a result you cannot see well from above. Under time pressure at the front door, it falls apart.

This is motor planning (praxis), the business of working out and ordering the steps of an unfamiliar movement. It is a common area of difficulty for autistic children, and one that occupational therapists work on directly, because independence at the door shapes the whole school run.

No-tie laces are the range we sell most of: elastic laces with magnetic buckles that click together, elastic laces held by small screw-together metal buckles, and elastic athletic versions, all of which turn an ordinary shoe into a slip-on. There are also side-zip and top-zip shoes, orthotic inserts, waterproof covers, deodorisers, and glow-in-the-dark laces that make the whole thing worth doing.
